What is a Structural adaptation?

a body part that does a certain “job” for an organism

100

What is a behavioral adaptation?

The ways a particular animal behaves (or the things the animal does) in order to survive in its natural habitat.

100
What is a learned behavior?
Behaviors that an animal learns through observation or experience. These behaviors help the organism survive.
100
What is camouflage?
A structural adaptation that allows an animal to blend in with its environment due to having the same color, shape and/or texture as its surroundings.
100
What is mimicry?
An adaptation in which a weaker animal copies a stronger animals' characteristics to avoid predators.
200

Explain how a polar bear's thick fur helps it survive. (2)

It's fur keeps it warm and the color of its fur helps it blend in with its surroundings.

200
What is migration?
A behavioral adaptation in which animals move seasonally to a place where there is more food and a more suitable climate.
200
What is instinct?
A natural behavior an animal can perform from birth. They do not need to learn the behavior.
200

Camouflage or Not: Polar bears  hair scatters light of all colours, and the animal appears white.

Camouflage.

200
Name an organism that uses mimicry to survive
Ex. viceroy butterfly, King snake, non-venemos frogs
300
Select the structural adaptation: A group of animals travels together in a large pack OR A hummingbird has a long, thin bill
A hummingbird has a long, thin bill
300
What is hibernation?
A behavioral adaptation in which an animal passes winter, or part of winter, in a state of deep sleep to avoid a lack of food and an unfavorable climate.
300

Learned behavior or instinct? By watching their mother, baby ducks avoid danger and know what is good to eat.

Learned behavior

300

Camouflage or Not: Bird's sharp eyesight and sharp claws.

NOT.

300
Why would an apex predator need camouflage?
Camouflage allows predators to sneak up on prey.
400
Select the structural adaptation: Giraffes have long necks that allow them to eat leaves in tall trees OR A bear hibernates in the winter

400
Select the behavioral adaptation: A lizard plays dead to avoid predators OR bird's have wings that allow them to fly from predators
A lizard plays dead to avoid predators
400

Learned behavior or instinct? Loggerhead turtles traveling to the sea and swimming immediately after hatching from their eggs in the sand.

Instinct

400

Camouflage or Not: Birds fly south in the winter because they can find more food.

NOT.

400
Owls have excellent hearing, which helps them hunt. This would be an example of a _________________________ adaptation.
structural
500

What would be a Structual adaptation for a giraffe?

Long neck, Strong Tounge,

500

Name at least 2 adaptations (structural or behavioral) a land animal that is a carnivore living in a cold climate might have.

1. Thick fur 2. Protective coloration to hide from prey 3. Sharp teeth to eat prey 4. The animal may hibernate in the winter, especially if its prey migrates 5. Travel in packs to hunt more efficiently

500
Learned behavior or instinct? A horse pulling a plow.
Learned behavior
500

Camouflage or Not: Octopus bears microscopic pigments called biochromes that absorbs and reflects light to change the real colour of the animal.

Camouflage.

500
What happens to an organism if their environment changes? Give an example.
If organisms cannot adapt they die. Examples vary.
