Why is it important to keep the decimal points lined up when adding and subtracting?

Because if you don't you will mix up what is supposed to be added or subtracted.  For example, you might accidentally add a number in the tenths place with a number in the hundredths place.  You can't do that because you won't get an accurate answer that makes sense.
