Addition Story:

Molly went to the store to buy ramen noodles for her lunch at school. She bought enough for lunch for 14 days. Her friend Emily wanted ramen for lunch too and bought enough for 10 days. How many packs of ramen did the two girls have altogether?

14, 10

(Always write down the numbers were are talking about)

14 + 10

I used the hundred's chart strategy:

Start at 14

Move down 1 row (10)

I landed on 24.

Molly and Emily had 24 packs of ramen altogether.

12 + 40

Start at: 12

Rows down: 4 (4 tens)

Moves to the right: 0 (no ones)

12 + 40 = 52

200

33 + 21

33 = 30 + 3

21 = 20 + 1

30 + 20 = 50

3 + 1 = 4

50 + 4 = 54

Addition Story:

Jaxson and Niklas entered a hot dog eating contest. Jaxson ate 20 hot dogs. Niklas ate 22 hotdogs. How many hotdogs did they eat altogether?

20, 22

(Always write down the numbers that have been talked about)

20 + 22 - I used the break apart strategy:

20 = 20 + 0

22 = 20 + 2

20 + 20 = 40

0 + 2 = 2

40 + 2 = 42

Jaxson and Niklas ate 42 hot dogs altogether and had big belly aches! :)

16 + 27

Start at: 16

Rows Down: 2

Moves to the right: 7

16 + 27 = 43

39 + 54

39 = 30 + 9

54 = 50 + 4

30 + 50 = 80

9 + 4 = 11

11 = 10 + 1

80 + 10 = 90

90 + 1 = 91

Addition Story:

Weston and Andrew entered a pie eating contest. Weston ate 2 whole pies which had 10 pieces each. Andrew ate one whole pie and 4 more pieces. How many pieces of pie did the boys eat altogether?

Write down all the important information you need to answer the question

1 pie = 10 pieces.

Weston: 2 pies = 10 + 10 = 20 pieces

Andrew: 1 pie + 4 more pieces = 10 + 4 = 14 pieces

20 + 14 = 34

I used the break apart strategy:

20 = 20 + 0

14 = 10 + 4

20 + 10 = 30

0 + 4 = 4

30 + 4 = 34

300

56 + _ = 77

Start at 56

Make your moves to 77

Rows Down: 2 (This gets you to 76)

Moves to the right: 1

2 tens + 1 = 21

400

36 + 47

36 = 30 + 6

47 = 40 + 7

30 + 40 = 70

6 + 7 = 13

13 = 10 + 3

70 + 10 = 80

80 + 3 = 83

Ms. Godlonton walked her dog, Raven, to the pet store to get her some treats. She walked from her house and to the pet store which took her 15 minutes. It took her 25 minutes to walk back home because Raven had to go to the bathroom a couple times on the way back. How many minutes did Ms. Godlonton walk for?

 25, 15

25 + 15

I used the break apart strategy:

25 = 20 + 5

15 = 10 + 5

20 + 10 = 30

5 + 5 = 10

30 + 10 = 40

15 + 25 = 40

Ms. Godlonton walked for 40 minutes altogether.

400

_ + 34 = 52

Start at 52 (because we jump back this time)

Jump back 34. Rows UP: 3. Moves to the LEFT: 4.

We land on 18.

18 + 34 = 52

500

320 + 120

320 = 300 + 20 + 0

120 = 100 + 20 + 0

400 + 40 + 0 = 440

Ms. Godlonton went Christmas shopping very early this year for her family and she spent 24 dollars on her dad's gift, 37 dollars on her mom's gift and 10 dollars on her brother's gift. (You can see who her favourite family member is haha) How much money did Ms. Godlonton spend altogether?

24, 37, 10

37 + 24 + 10

Let's solve 37 + 24 first. I used the break apart strategy:

37 = 30 + 7

24 = 20 + 4

30 + 20 = 50

7 + 4 = 11

11 = 10 + 1

50 + 10 = 60

60 + 1 = 61

Then we can add  the 10 more dollars:

61 + 10 = 71

Ms. Godlonton spent 71 dollars altogether.

500

75 + 30

Start at 75

Rows down: 3. (You can only go as far as 95 before you run out of room to count on the hundreds chart).

95 = 2 rows = 20

20 + 10 = 30

95 + 10 = 105
