Hollybush Mansion
The University received worldwide attention when it hosted a historic summit conference between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin in Hollybush. The University was chosen because of its strategic location midway between Washington, D.C., and the United Nations in New York City, where Kosygin was scheduled to speak. The meetings between the two leaders, held June 23-25, 1967, presaged a thaw in the Cold War and eased world tensions. President Lyndon B Johnson loved the green plush chairs used during the Summit so much, that he decided to take them back to his house. GSC President Thomas Robinson called LBJ about the chairs and asked for them to be returned. When the chairs came back, he noticed they were slightly different and that they were replicas! To this day. The chairs are on display in the Lyndon B. Johnson memorial library in Austin, TX and a plaque states that the chairs were “donated” by Rowan University, but in fact, they were truly stolen.
