What is wrong with this section?

The text says, "And now when I see her searching the garbage—for what? The thing we assassinated? I talk about how I did not plant the seeds too deeply, how it was the fault of the earth, the land, of our town. I even think now that the land of the entire country was hostile to marigolds that year. This soil is bad for certain kinds of flowers. Certain seeds it will not nurture, certain fruit it will not bear, and when the land kills of its own volition, we acquiesce and say the victim had no right to live. We are wrong, of course, but it doesn’t matter. It’s too late. At least on the edge of my town, among the garbage and the sunflowers of my town, it’s much, much, much too late."

The in-text citation is missing.

Read the lines from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (1798).

"There passed a weary time. Each throat / Was parched, and glazed each eye. /A weary time! a weary time! / How glazed each weary eye, // When looking westward, I beheld / A something in the sky. [...] With throats unslaked, with black lips baked, / We could nor laugh nor wail; / Through utter drought all dumb we stood! / I bit my arm, I sucked the blood, / And cried, A sail! a sail!"

Read the poem "When I Heard the Learn'd Astrologer" by Walt Whitman (1867).

When I heard the learn’d astronomer, / When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me, / When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them, / When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room, / How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick, / Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself, / In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time, / Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

When Juliet first reads this poem, she is reminded of her sociology class. She does not like sitting in class and listening to lectures about the topic, but she heavily enjoys watching people interact and looking at human behavior. Because of this, she believes Walt Whitman's poem is about how some subjects need to be experienced rather than taught. What lens is Juliet using?

Reader Response

What is wrong with this section?

"The divide between Catholicism and Protestant Christianity ruptured the foundation of Europe during the Protestant Reformation. Yet, despite this major shift in beliefs and the revealing of the notable differences in doctrine of Catholics and Protestants, there were still hefty moments of overlap. Morals, virtues, and sins remained relatively unchanged, and literary works were still able to encompass similar doctrine regardless of their denomination. However, Edmund Spenser did not take the same route. Rather than adhering himself to more modern doctrine and ideals, he stepped into the past to explain the present, exploring Greco-Roman deities and their stories rather than sticking to the commonalities of Christianity. However, I believe the inclusion convolutes matters, and Spenser’s comparisons fall flat as a result."

First person was used: "However, I believe the inclusion convoluted matters, and Spenser's comparisons fall flat as a result."

If you were to look at the following text from an environmental perspective, which lens would you use?

Where the Crawdads Sing, Delia Owens (2018)

"Marsh is not swamp. Marsh is a space of light, where grass grows in water, and water flows into the sky. Slow-moving creeks wander, carrying the orb of the sun with them to the sea, and longlegged birds lift with unexpected grace—as though not built to fly— against the roar of a thousand snow geese. Then within the marsh, here and there, true swamp crawls into low-lying bogs, hidden in clammy forests. Swamp water is still and dark, having swallowed the light in its muddy throat. Even night crawlers are diurnal in this lair. There are sounds, of course, but compared to the marsh, the swamp is quiet because decomposition is cellular work. Life decays and reeks and returns to the rotted duff; a poignant wallow of death begetting life."
