 The Mysterious Jewel Theft

A precious diamond was stolen from a museum. The police questioned four suspects, and each gave a statement:

  1. Anna: "I didn’t steal the diamond."
  2. Brian: "Anna is lying."
  3. Clara: "Brian is lying."
  4. David: "Clara is lying."

The police know that only one of these statements is true. Who stole the diamond?

Brian stole the diamond.

  • If Anna's statement is true, then Brian's statement would also be true, which violates the rule that only one statement is true.
  • If Clara's statement is true, then David's statement would also be true, which again violates the rule.
  • If David's statement is true, then Clara’s would also be true.
  • Thus, Brian’s statement is the only one that can be true, meaning Anna lied, and she did not steal the diamond. Hence, Brian is the thief.
