Who was the famous Canadian who decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research?


In 1980, with one leg having been amputated due to cancer, Terry Fox decided to run across Canada to raise money (1$ from every Canadian) for cancer research in a Marathon of Hope. With the use of a customized running prothesis, he set out from St. John's, Newfoundland, on 12 April 1980 and covered 5,373 km in 143 days — an average of 42 km (26 miles) per day.

The Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has become an annual non-competitive charity event held around the world to raise money for cancer research in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.
