What are the two types of ways we can check if someone is conscious? Give one example of each
Verbal: calling their name, asking if they are ok
Physical: shoulder squeeze, press behind the jaw, sternum rub
How many breaths should someone be taking?
1 breath every 5 secs
If you don't have naloxone on you, what can you still do to save a life?
Keep breathing for them
Before we check if someone is ok, we want to check one thing before we approach someone.
Scene safety
What are three different devices that can be used to give someone breathes?
Bonus: what flow rate of oxgyen should be used with the most advanced device?
Naloxone kit face mask, pocket mask, BVM
Bonus: 15L/min oxygen flow rate for BVM
How does naloxone work?
Bonus: how long does it take to work and how long does it last in the body?
Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, when it enters the body it knocks opioids off receptors and blocks the receptor without sending a signal. This reverses the effects of the opioid and allows the body to naturally process the opioid.
Can take 2-3mins to work and stay in the body for 20-90mins
If you don't know how long someone has been un responsive, what is one other thing that you should check besides breathing?
Bonus: what do you do if this thing is not present?
Check pulse
If you can find it, start CPR
Choose two team members to show how to use a BVM
Make sure:
Mask has good seal
Bag is squeezed 1 every 5 seconds and 1/3-1/2 dept of bag
What is chest wall rigidity? Why does it happen?
Bonus: how might this affect an overdose response? What is the reccommendation for naloxone administration?
occures from rapid administration of very potent opioids. Rigidty occurs in the muscles between the ribs. Can also have rigidity in the jaw/limbs.
Bonus: Can be hard to move someone, can make it difficult to administer breathes. Give 2 doses naloxone right away to relax the body, then start breathing for them.
What are the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose? Why do people die from a opioid overdose?
blue lips, pale cool clammy skin, unresponsive, rigidity
People die from lack of oxygen to the brain/body
What is a pulse oximeter?
Bonus: What is a healthy range / reading of a pulse oximeter for someone who is OK and not overdosing?
Measures oxygen saturation in the body
Healthy reading is 94+
Choose 1 team member to show the class how to prep a shot of naloxone
- swirl ampule before you break it
- break ampule
- draw up naloxone into needle
- remove air
- inject in muscle
