Dred Scott
The Dred Scott decision was the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on March 6, 1857, that having lived in a free state and territory did not entitle an enslaved person, Dred Scott, to his freedom. In essence, the decision argued that, as someone's property, Scott was not a citizen and could not sue in a federal court.

Born sometime in the 1540s or 1550s, Chief Powhatan became the leader of more than 30 tribes and controlled the area where English colonists formed the Jamestown settlement in 1607. He initially traded with the colonists before clashing with them.
Powhatan captured and imprisoned John Smith in late 1607 and according to one account, threatened to have him killed. However, within a month, Smith was free, back in Jamestown, and had concluded a deal by which Powhatan would provide the colonists with food.
John Smith played an important role in the establishment of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America in the early 17th century.

While in Mexico, he worked on a treatise on revolutionary art with Diego Rivera. He also had an affair with Rivera's wife and fellow painter, Frida Kahlo, shortly after he and his wife were granted political asylum in Mexico in 1936. He developed a variant of Marxism known as Trotskyism. He was assassinated in 1940 by an ice-ax-wielding assassin at his compound outside Mexico City. The killer—Ramón Mercader—was a Spanish communist and probable agent of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
