Pay attention to yourself and your behaviors to recognize if you are bullying others. Often, bullying arises from people’s insecurities. Address your insecurities by building self-esteem and healthy relationships. Practice empathy for others and get help if you find yourself acting aggressively toward others.
Focus on your own beliefs and build your confidence. People who bully others sometimes target people who seem weak or insecure. Being comfortable with yourself can keep them away (Figure 16.6).
Celebrate your peers’ differences. Appreciating differences and diversity can create a positive environment and help people feel better about themselves.
Avoid those who bully others whenever possible. If someone who bullies others is nearby, sit in a different part of the cafeteria or hang out in a different place after school.
Use the buddy system. Try to be with a friend whenever you might run into someone who bullies others. This might prevent the person from acting.
