Why did people follow absolute monarchs?

Fear – Louis XIV will make the first standing army for France, that can crush traitors in an instant.  Just like today anyone who criticizes the King of Saudi Arabia may be sentenced to jail time and 200 public lashes with a whip.

Brainwashing -   The people may not know any different leadership style as they have little education.  They may believe their leader is a god.  Louis XIV will claim that his power to rule comes for god (Divine Right) and build schools that brainwash the people through propaganda or be a patron of artwork that shows him as a divinely chosen leader (see examples).

Describe 3 methods that Louis XIV used to centralize his power

  1. Le Ballet de la Nuit- a 12 hour long play, in which Louis plays himself as a the sun come to vanquish the night. Nobles were required to attend.

  1. Life at Versailles- Nobles were forced to live at the palace of Versailles for part of the year, this seperated them from their homes and their people all the while getting them used to the fancy lifestyle that Versailles provided for them.

  1. Getting-up and going-to-bed ceremonies- Each morning and night, Louis XIV was surrounded by an audience who watched him wake and prepared for the day, or prepare to sleep. Being part of this group was considered a great honor.

  1. System of Etiquette- Nobles had to follow these rules while living in Versailles, including: scratching on doors with their pinky finger, and not being allowed to sit in the king’s presence.

  1. Dress Code- Louis made sure that the nobility all wore very expensive clothing as a symbol of wealth and power. Sometimes, they even went into debt to afford the latest fashion.

  1. Code Louis- Louis named himself the leader of the Catholic church in France (instead of the Pope). He chooses the other religious leaders.

  2. Revoke the Edict of Nantes- Louis got rid of religious freedom in France, forcing everybody to convert to Catholicism or die.
