Scenario: You are the costume Designer for a period show, and sticking with the designs of the period is very important to you. The director brings in a hat that they want a certain character to use that is not time period appropriate, and clashes with your design. What do you do?

1. tactfully and kindly tell the director that the hat he picks out is does not fit the time period, and would look out of place.

the director responds that he thinks it is perfect for this character's personality though, and wants to use it anyway, because who else will notice this one hat isn't from the time period the show is in?

2. you can try to convince further by explaining that it is important to you that the few who will recognize the discrepancies in period pieces.

3. if the director still insists, drop it. it is ultimately the directors decision, because it is the director's vision we are trying to create.
