AIRC was chartered as Spenard Rotary in 1958. What year did we change our name to Anchorage International Rotary Club.

The meetings of the new Spenard Club began at the Forest Park Country Club, held at noon on Fridays, and for several years the membership barely held at about 25. Of the 16 Rotary clubs in Alaska, our club sponsored five of these clubs. These include Anchorage East, Wasilla, Eagle River, Kenai, and Anchorage South.

In the past, new members were given a book along with a red badge of membership. The task of a new member was to take the book to every club in town and get the President of the other clubs to sign it. This book contains a lot of History of Rotary and when attending meetings, NM will be asked about factual contents of the book by the sergeant at arms and is expected to be able to answer the question correctly. If the NM failed to answer, there was a fine imposed.

Before AIRC Memorial Scholarship Fund,  it was named after our member. 

What is Virgil Knight Scholarship Fund?


After his death, the club established the Virgil Knight Scholarship Fund, and in the following years, we had lost several outstanding members and it was felt that a memorial to all of our departed members was appropriate. In 1994 the scholarship fund was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation and renamed the Anchorage International Rotary Club Memorial Scholarship Fund.
