What type of metal should be hot-dimpled? (AM.II.A.K6)
7075-T6, 2024-T81 aluminum alloys, and magnesium alloys.
Where can you find instructions for hoisting an A/C to replace wheels with floats? (AM.II.E.K13)
In the A/C maintenance manual.
What are the two basic types of hyd. fluid used in modern A/C? (AM.II.F.K1)
Mineral base and phosphate ester based fluid.
What is the state of the refrigerant as it leaves the evaporator? (AM.II.G.K6)
A low-pressure vapor.
What is the frequency of AC voltage used in A/C? (AM.II.K.K2)
400Hz
Should a riveted joint fail in shear or in bearing? (AM.II.A.K17)
It should fail in shear. The rivets should shear before the sheet tears at the rivet holes.
How should new A/C tires be stored? (AM.II.E.K10)
In a dark, cool location away from electrical motors or battery chargers.
What is the purpose of an accumulator in an A/C hyd. system? (AM.II.F.K2)
The accumulator holds pressure on the hyd. fluid in the system. The pressure is held by compressed air or nitrogen acting on the fluid through a bladder, diaphragm, or a piston.
What is a continuous-flow oxygen system? (AM.II.G.K9)
An oxygen system that continuously flows a metered amount of oxygen into the mask.
How many electrical phases are in A/C alterantors? (AM.II.K.K2)
Three
What is the difference between brazing and welding? (AM.II.A.K12)
In brazing, the base metal is not melted, but is covered with a low-melting point alloy. In welding, the base metal is melted.
What would cause the warning horn to sound when the throttles are pulled back, reducing the engine power for landing? (AM.II.E.K6)
The warning horn will sound if any of the landing gears are not down and locked.
What is the difference between a single-acting and double-acting hand pump? (AM.II.F.K2)
Single-acting pumps move fluid in only one direction of handle operation. Double-acting hand pumps move fluid in both directions of handle movement.
What regulates the temp. in an A/C cabin that is heated with a combustion heater? (AM.II.G.K5)
A thermostat senses the cabin temp. and cycles the fuel valve on or off to maintain the temp. at the desired value.
What is the advantage of using AC power over DC power? (AM.II.K.K2)
AC voltages can be steeped up to higher voltages, which means that current goes down and smaller wires can be sued to save weight. The voltage is stepped back down at the point of use.
What must be done to an A/C fuel tank before it can be repaired by welding? (AM.II.A.K9)
The gas fumes should be purged from the tank by running live steam through it for at least 30 mins, by soaking it in water, or by filling it with nitrogen or CO2.
What is the function of a wheel speed sensor in a anti-skid brake system? (AM.II.A.K8)
The wheel speed sensor is a DC generator that is used to produce a voltage proportional to wheel speed. Rotational speed change in excess of programmed parameters will engage the anti-skid data.
What is the difference in function between a pressure regulator and a pressure relief valve? (AM.II.F.K10)
Pressure regulators control overall system pressure. Pressure relief valves act as a back-up to the pressure regulator to prevent overpressure damage to the system and components.
What happens to a combustion heater if the flow of ventilating air is restricted? (AM.II.G.K5)
If the ventilating air is restricted and the temp. reaches a preset value, the limit switch will cause the fuel to be shut off to the heater.
What is meant by "flashing" the field of a generator? (AM.II.A.K.K1)
Restoring the residual magnetism to the frame of the generator. This is done by passing battery current through the field coils in the direction it normally flows when the generator is operating.
When drilling out rivets on an A/C or drilling holes for a repair, what precaution should be taken? (AM.II.A.K9)
Do not allow the drill to enter in the space behind the structure, as the drill may cause damage to other systems or structures.
What are the three basic brake actuating systems? (AM.II.E.K12)
Independent System - Not part of the main hyd. system
Power Boost - Main hyd. system pressure does not enter the brakes, it is only used to assist the rudder pedals through use of the power boost master cylinder
Power Brake - Only uses the main hyd. system as a source of pressure and contains a debooster which reduces pressure and increases volume
What does an unloading valve do in a hyd. system? (AM.II.F.K10)
It controls system pressure by shifting the pump outlet fluid from the pressurized system back into the reservoir when the system pressure is high enough. The fluid circulates with very little load on the pump until the system pressure drops to the regulator kick-in valve. The pump then forces fluid into the system until the pressure builds back up to the regulator kick-out valve.
How is the heat removed from an A/C cabin with a vapor-cycle air conditioning system? (AM.II.G.K6)
The cabin heat is absorbed by the refrigerant in the evaporator, then carried outside the A/C where it is given up to the outside air in the condenser.
How does a vibrator-type voltage regulator maintain a constant voltage? (AM.II.K.K5)
When the voltage rises above the desired value, an electromagnetic relay opens and inserts a resistor in the generator field circuit, decreasing the field current and lowering the generator output voltage.
