Although Surah Al-Fatiha is only 7 verses, it is divided into three distinct linguistic sections. What is the shift in the speaker/narrator that happens at verse 5?

The first 4 verses are us speaking about Allah in the third person (He, Him), and at verse 5, we shift to speaking directly to Allah in the second person (You, You alone).

In the phrase "Rabb al-'Alameen", what does the word 'Alameen literally translate to, and does it only include humans?

It translates to "all the worlds." It does not only include humans; it includes angels, jinn, animals, plants, and all of creation.

The Hadith on Shukr (Sahih Muslim) says: "Amazing is the affair of the believer, for all his affairs are good..." What are the two states a believer goes through, and what is the "good" in each state?

1) In ease/comfort, they are grateful (shukr), so they are rewarded. 2) In hardship/difficulty, they are patient (sabr), so they are rewarded.

We recite Al-Fatiha in every single rak'ah of salah. Why does Allah call it a "conversation" (Hadith Qudsi) between Him and His servant?

Because the servant recites the verses, and after each verse, Allah responds. (e.g., When you say "All praise is for Allah," Allah says, "My servant has praised Me.")

200

The surah starts with "Alhamdulillah" (praise/gratitude). Grammatically, putting "Al" (the definite article) before "Hamd" means what about the praise?

It means ALL praise belongs to Allah, in every situation, absolutely and completely. No praise is outside of Him.

200

What is the difference between Hamd (praise) and Shukr (gratitude)?

Hamd is praising Allah for His perfect names and attributes (who He is). Shukr is thanking Allah for specific blessings, favors, and actions He has given us (what He does).

What does the name "Umm al-Kitab" (Mother of the Book) mean, and what are TWO core Islamic concepts that Al-Fatiha summarizes for the entire Qur'an?

It means the summary/foundation of the Qur'an. It summarizes 1) Tawhid (Oneness of Allah and worshipping Him alone) and 2) Akhirah (The Day of Judgment/accountability).

300

What is the deep theological difference between Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Ar-Raheem (The Especially Merciful) regarding who receives that mercy and when?

Ar-Rahman is the vast, general mercy that covers all of creation in this life (e.g., breathing, rain, provision). Ar-Raheem is the specific, special mercy that is reserved for the believers in the Hereafter.

300

True gratitude isn't just saying "Alhamdulillah" with your tongue. In Islam, what are the other two components of true Shukr?

1) Acknowledging the blessing in your heart (knowing it came from Allah). 2) Using the blessing in a way that pleases Allah with your actions (e.g., using your health to pray, or your wealth to give charity).

400

In "Ihdina as-sirata al-mustaqeem" (Guide us to the straight path), the word Ihdina comes from the root word Huda. What is the difference between Al-Hidayah (general guidance given to everyone) and At-Tawfiq (specific guidance to act upon it)?

Al-Hidayah is the guidance of showing the truth (which Allah gives to all of humanity through the Prophets/Qur'an). At-Tawfiq is the divine success/ability to actually act on that truth and stay on the path.

400

Look at "Maliki Yawm ad-Deen" (Master of the Day of Judgment). Why do you think Allah chose to use "Malik" (Master/King) here instead of "Rabb" (Lord/Sustainer)?

Rabb implies care, nurture, and mercy. Malik implies absolute authority, ownership, and power. On the Day of Judgment, all worldly authority will vanish, and Allah's absolute Kingship and power will be fully manifested.

The hadith says "If he is given ease and is grateful..." What is the spiritual trap or danger of being given constant ease without practicing gratitude?

A person can become entitled, forget Allah, and fall into Kufr (ingratitude/disbelief). Ease can make people heedless.

500

In the final verse, the path of the favored is contrasted with two other groups: those who earned anger (maghdoobi 'alayhim) and those who went astray (dhaalleen). What is the difference between these two groups?

The first group knew the truth but deliberately rebelled and rejected it (e.g., arrogance). The second group did not know the truth and got lost due to ignorance/lack of effort.

500

In "Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een" (You alone we worship, You alone we seek help from), why does worship ('ibadah) come before seeking help (isti'anah)?

Because our ultimate purpose and reason for existence is to worship Allah. Seeking His help is a means to achieve that worship. Worship is the goal; asking for help is the tool to get there.

500

The ultimate test of patience (sabr) is found in the story of Prophet Ayyub (Job). How did Prophet Ayyub show both ultimate patience in hardship AND ultimate gratitude to Allah?

He was patient when he lost his wealth, health, and family (never complaining about Allah to people). But he showed gratitude by never blaming Allah, always praising Him, and knowing that Allah had blessed him with 70+ years of good health and provision before the trial.
