Explain the Staff, Hood, and Paper

The hood (monastic cowl): shows he’s a monk/hermit -the “Father of Monasticism.” The dark hood = renouncing the world and living in prayer.
The staff (often T-shaped/Cross Shaped): symbol of an abba/elder. It shows spiritual authority and also his life as a desert shepherd of monks.
The paper/scroll: stands for his teachings and sayings (the “Sayings of the Desert Fathers”) and also that his life was written and passed on to the Church -he was a teacher and not just a hermit.
How did St. George show his faith in Christ?

Refusing to deny Christ even when the emperor ordered it -enduring cruel tortures without giving up, and by confessing Jesus openly in front of rulers

Why are there two camels next St. Mena

After St. Mena was martyred, his body was put on a camel to be taken for burial.
On the way, the camel stopped miraculously in the Western Desert (near Lake Mariout) and wouldn’t move.
They tried another camel, and the same thing happened — it stopped in the same spot.
The people understood this as God showing “this is where he should be buried.”
Later, that place became a huge pilgrimage site (the city of St. Mena).

Why is St. Mark always depicted with a lion?
- Mark’s Gospel opens with “the voice of one crying in the wilderness” (John the Baptist)
- Church Fathers likened to a lion’s roar in the desert (Mark 1:3)
- Lion symbolizes Mark’s shorter, direct, powerful Gospel and his proclamation in the “wilderness.”
