When he is in a safe setting he is able to focus on his studies and working hard. When he is in an unsafe setting his focus is survival, being a leader and staying positive. 

Setting is time & place. Salva's age at the time he is in certain settings also changes how he acts. Having to deal with so many difficult settings at such a young age shaped Salva's identity into one of a survivor and leader.
