The irony in Thomas Jefferson’s quote comes from the fact that he was surrounded by slavery his whole life, and owned an immeasurable number of enslaved, but freed only a handful of them.
This story is important because it shows Jefferson’s hypocrisy in writing the Declaration, and it shows that America never upheld its value in terms of freedom, and is built on the glorification of heroes who committed atrocities to build the country that stands today. The country hid these truths to paint Jefferson, one of the earliest leaders of the country, as a hero, and protect his identity as a great white man who did wonderful things for the still-developing country.
