Roger Williams founded Rhode Island because he was kicked out of Massachusetts Bay and believed in freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Rhode Island was known for being a refuge for the oppressed.

What is a hornbook and what was it used for?
A hornbook is a thin, paddle-shaped, wooden board with a paper sheet that was covered with a thin layer of bull's horn. Most children used it to learn to read and it listed the alphabet and the Lord's Prayer. It usually hung on a string around the student's neck so it could be used at any time.

Parliament in England had elected officials from England but not from the colonies. The colonists felt it unfair that they did not have any elected officials to represent them in Parliament, but yet were still being taxed by England.
