What the Chicago Fire did. 
What is it left 1/3 of the city burned, left 100,000 Chicagoans homeless and even more jobless, killed around 300 people, and burned a huge area in downtown Chicago. They had to completely rebuild Chicago because it was an extremely important city to the U.S and they needed to rebuild a safer environment for industry.

Why the weather was a problem in Westward Expansion. 
What is people weren't prepared for harsh weather and conditions in the plain states. There was no hills or trees to stop wind, and snow made things extremely difficult.

The Homestead Act of 1862 stated this. 
What is Lincoln wanted people to go out and settle in the West. He encouraged people to do this by passing this act which gave 160 acres of free land for settlers(excellent land).

What is it was an important lumber city and an important industrial center, was the most important railroad hub in the country(gateway to the West), and was the lynchpin that held America together(raw goods, manufactured goods, lumber, etc... was shipped to and from there)?

Why building houses was so difficult once in the West. 
Plain states don't have trees, so there is no building quality lumber. Settlers had to build their houses with sod until they could get enough money to get lumber. This was problematic because sod was not a very good building material.

Escaping cities was a push factor because settlers wanted to leave the dysfunctionality of cities. Eastern cities were overcrowded, many destroyed, dirty/diseases spread quickly, crime-filled, and full of prostitution and drunkards.

People would apply for a homestead, once approved you would go and settle on your allotted land. In 5 years, the Government would check on you and if you improved the land significantly, then it is yours for free.

This caused California's population to boom, causing it to become a state before even being a territory. It boosted U.S economy(helping the Union win the Civil War). Many immigrants came to California as well, different people groups didn't get along, causing racial tension.

It was an affordable opportunity for everyone of any race. Most settlers would farm or raise livestock.
