To cement the abolition of slavery, Congress passed this Amendment on January 31, 1865. The amendment legally abolished slavery “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”

Women lined the rooftop and windows of the ten-story building and jumped, landing in a “mangled, bloody pulp.” By the time the fire burned itself out, 71 workers were injured and 146 had died.
