The PNS is made up of nerve tissue and fibers outside the brain and spinal cord. It connects the CNS to the rest of the body and is divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. Somatic - consists of sensory and motor neurons distributed throughout skin, joints, and muscles. Autonomic - regulates heartbeat, respiration, digestion and glandular secretions. These functions are automatic and independent of conscious control.
