NO, BY TANYA METAKSA, NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION
Thirty or 40 years ago, kids could bring guns to school because they were participating in rifle teams or going squirrel hunting after school--and there was no violence. Therefore the issue of guns is not the problem. The solution is to prevent violence and to look at what's causing it.
Youth crime has run rampant through a juvenile-justice system that was built decades ago for an entirely different kind of juvenile offender. When you look at juvenile criminals, most of them, like their adult counterparts, are repeat offenders. What happens is that the juveniles are mainstreamed back into the schools after a slap on the wrist for some serious crimes.
Tanya Metaksa begins her argument by blaming increased crime among young people on
A. easy access to guns kept in the home
B. a tradition of bringing guns to school.
C. strict gun laws that prevent children from becoming familiar with guns.
D. too lenient treatment of young criminals.
