This festival took place in Marduk’s temple. After days of hymns and cleansing rituals, the king and a high priest entered the presence of Marduk’s statue, a very holy place. The king must cry to ensure that Marduk was favorable. If he didn’t cry, Marduk would be angry.

It took place at the beginning of the agricultural season. It marked their need for divine favor for a favorable year.

If the Egyptians had just expelled the Hyksos, it would explain why they would enslave the Israelites. It would have been brutal to live under the Pharaoh who had driven outsiders out of their country.

What was significant about Cyrus Cylinder? The cylinder describes how Nabonidus ended the worship of Marduk and plotted evil against his city (Babylon).

This shows us why Cyrus was able to come into the city without any resistance. He distrubted this information before coming into the city and used religious information to ensure the Babylonians would be open to his rule.

Name two things that made the Hebrew religion Distinct from other religions and cultures of the time

Their religion is different from others in that 1) their God is spiritually present and allows no carved images. 2) He also does not have the human feelings, needs, or relationships of common ancient gods, 3)the Israelites demanded that their God was the ONLY God, a jealous God, and that the other nations must recognize him as well. 4) God did not allow them to take the wealth and land of other nations. If they brought in treasures, they went towards the worship of God.

Why did the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV change his name to Akhenaton?

Amenhotep IV forcefully replaced Egypt’s polytheistic religion with monotheistic worship of the sun disk, Aton (distinct from Amon, the sun-god, the usual primary Egyptian deity). He changed his name from Amenhotep IV (Amon is Satisfied) to Akhenaton (Spirit of Aton). Name changes are important in history and often tell us something. His new religion did not last and his name was also chiseled off all of the monuments.
