If we are able to identify we're starting to feel angry - when we're feeling lower on the feeling thermometer, we are able to control and address our anger better. It is very difficult to control anger when it is strong.

What is the difference between a healthy coping skills and and unhealthy coping skill? 


A healthy coping skill helps you and makes you feel better in the long run, and unhealthy coping skill normally makes you feel good right away, but does not help you long term. 

Example: A friend says something that offends you 

Healthy Coping skill would be using the S.T.O.P skill and maintaining a healthy relationship with the friend. (bonus points for assertiveness) 

Unhealthy coping skill: you feel a lot better once you punch your friend in the face. But now you're not friends anymore and your old friend keeps making me comments in the lunchroom.

Helps us communicate more clearly what we are feeling and how strongly we are feeling it. Helps us get our needs met.

That day, You told your teacher their lesson was dumb, you ran away from your friends when they asked you to play soccer and you screamed at your dog when he got in your way. You cannot stop feeling angry - what should you do?

- Recognize your angry signs (being unkind to others, yelling) 

- use a skill to regulate (T.I.P.P and the 54321 method)

 - use a coping skill (journaling/ drawing , going on a walk, watching your favorite TV show)

- ask for help/ Express feelings  ( talk to a trusted adult such as a family member, teacher or ACE staff )
