1. Orwell wants to understand that power leads to corruption. The pigs, who initially lead the rebellion with the goal of creating an equal society, gradually become just as bad as humans
2. Orwell shows how those in power can control people by using language. The pigs are clever and use words to make the other animals believe what they want. They change the rules of the farm to benefit themselves and use slogans like "All animals are equal" to convince the others that they're all treated fairly.

Massive plan for industrialization; big problem was there was not enough food for people in the country. The reality of life in Russia (people starving to death) was very different from what Stalin led the rest of the world believe. When politicians would visit Russia he would clean up the streets, hand out food and have parades making people look happy.
