Scientists found a whale fossil in the middle of the desert because......

The desert habitat used to be an ocean.

100

The green anoles are such good climbers because.....

They have so many sticky toe scales.

100

How did dairy cows become so good at producing milk?

Cows produce more milk now because people bred the cows that produced more milk.

100

Animals that eat fruit, leaves and seeds are called?

herbivores

100

How does living in a group help vervet monkeys survive?

They warn each other of danger

200

What is an example of evidence that dinosaurs look like big reptiles?

Dinosaur skulls had/have similar skulls to reptiles today.

200

Why do green anoles climb tree's

To find food like bugs and to escape predators like the brown anoles

BONUS (for students who have completed “Power of Flowers,” Mystery 3):

How is breeding dogs similar to or different from breeding apples?

Double the POINTS!!!!

Breeding dogs and breeding apples are very similar.  In both cases, people selected individuals they they liked and got them to reproduce.  They mated the dogs and they planted the apple seeds.  In the next generation, the dogs and apples were more like the way people wanted them to be.  People kept selecting and reproducing the individuals they wanted and over many generations, the dogs and apples were how people wanted them.

Animals that eat pray, such as vervet monkeys are called....

Carnivores

200

If dry weather kills many of the plants in the vervet monkey habitat, how would that affect the vervet monkeys?

They would be less likely to survive.

300

TRUE OR FALSE: A polar habitat today was always a polar habitat in the past.

False

300

What happened to the green anoles when the brown anoles arrived on Lizard Island?  Why?

The green anoles with more sticky toe scales were better climbers and could escape the brown anoles.  The better climber green anoles survived and had babies who were also good climbers.  Over many generations, there were more good climber green anoles with more sticky toe pads.

300

There are so many different varieties of dogs because.....

Different breeds of dogs have been created by people over many generations.  For example, if people wanted smaller dogs, they would pick two smaller dogs to have babies.  The babies would probably be smaller.  Then they would do that again over many generations until the dogs were always smaller.

Animals that eat both fruit, leaves, and meat are called....

Omnivores

List 5 different animals that live in groups.

Crows, Elephants, Wolves, parer Dogs, Sea Otters, Lions, BEE's, hyenas, Gorrillas (monkeys) Dolphins, Jellyfish,Raccoons, Fox, Deer ect.

400

TRUE OR FALSE: We can learn about extinct animals by studying their fossils and comparing them to animals living today.

TRUE

400

Which green anoles were most likely to be caught by the brown anoles?  Why?

The green anoles that had fewer sticky toe pads weren’t as good at climbing so they were more likely to be eaten by the brown anoles.

Chickens living today have bigger eggs than chickens that lived a long time ago. How do you think that happened?

People selected and mated the chickens that had the biggest eggs. Then, they selected their babies that had the biggest eggs. Selection over many years led to chickens today that have really big eggs.

How could you figure out what the habitat used to be like where you live? How could you tell which plants and animals used to live there?

I could dig deep below the ground and look for fossils of living things that lived there a long time ago. The types of fossils I found would tell me what the habitat was like.

400

List 5 animals that DO NOT live in a group.

Would they benefit from living in a group or are they better alone?

Snow leopard, Bears, Great white sharks, Moles, Jaguars, Pandas, Platypus,

500

TRUE OR FALSE: When habitats change the kinds of animals and plants that live there change too? explain/and give examples.

True

example- ocean habitat drys up fish, and other sea animals die.

example- wet lands turns into a lake or river, the trees dont grow in the middle of the lake.

500

Why is the group of baby green anoles better climbers than the group of parent green anoles?

The parent green anoles that were better climbers were more likely to escape the brown anoles and have babies.  Parent anoles with a lot of sticky toe pads had babies with more sticky toe pads so the babies were better at climbing than the parent generation.

The system for animal classification is called taxonomy. What are the 6 simple groups that all animals fall into?

Mammals, Birds, Repites, Amphibians (frogs)  Inverterbrates, (bugs) Fish.

Scientists in Montana, USA, discovered a fossil mosquito in a rock that is millions of years old. What do you think the habitat was like in Montana millions of years ago?

Mosquitoes need warm, wet (tropical) habitats to survive. That means that millions of years ago, there was a tropical habitat in Montana.

How does living in a group help some animals survive? Give at least two animal examples to support your answer.

Students provide reasons (food, protection, responding to changes in the environment) supported by clear animal examples.

Sample response: “Some animals survive better in a group because it helps them avoid getting eaten by predators. For example, bison form a ring around their calves to protect them from wolves. Other animals survive better because it helps them get food. For example, lions in a pride hunt together. Other animals survive better when the environment changes. For example, snow monkeys huddle together to stay warm in a snow storm.”
