He carries a reverse blade sword to use as protection and a tool to help other people in need--but of course the blade cannot cut anything. He carries this kind of sword instead of a regular one to repent for his sins during the war. After saving a young woman, she gives him a place to stay at her dojo, since she realizes that he is a kind-hearted person even with his infamous reputation.
