What is fun?
Physical objects that students can touch, count, sort, position, and consider.
What are manipulatives?
This work can be seen as talking with students about racism in their lives, our community, and beyond. Checking my own biases, continuing my education, and promoting students of color explicitly.
What is anti-racism?
This is something all people should give and receive. Examples in teaching are greeting people as they enter, listening while they speak, acknowledging student's opinions, cultures, and preferences.
What is R-E-S-P-E-C-T?
Skill building activities that allow students to test their knowledge in a fun, sometimes competitive way.
What are games?
This involves lessons, artwork, and references to successful people in math and sciences from a variety of races, genders, sexualities, and backgrounds for all students to be able to see a part of themselves.
What is representation?
Examples of this can be hung around the classroom/school for students and staff to engage with and elicit a sense of pride for the owner.
What is student work?
Introduced by Dan Meyer, these activities expose students to real-world problems, sparking their curiosity, and get them solving problems before revealing the answers at the end.
What is 3-Act Math?
This CR teaching goal involves seeking out local representatives of color and other marginalized groups to come in and speak to the students about their jobs and life experiences within the world of mathematics. It also includes referencing Worcester within lessons and discussions.
What is community involvement?
This is not strictly providing students with information and then asking for it back, but instead guiding them to notice, wonder, hypothesize, and research mathematical ideas.
What is discovery-based learning?
The goal here is getting people up and about within the classroom and school. Examples of it are having students come up to the board, walking around for projects and games, and using their bodies as tools for measurement.
What is movement?
This kind of support involves using gestures, providing visuals, translations, sentence frames, graphic organizers, and small group/partner discussions.
