The prevention of ICE.
What is Anti-Icing?
When fuel changes from a liquid into a vapor, heat is absorbed from the air, causing the surrounding air temp to drop. Moisture in the form of an invisible water vapor will condense into liquid water. When the temp is low enough it will freeze & stick
What is Carburetor Icing?
The component that aids in the prevention of carburetor icing?
What is the Air Diverter Butterfly?
Controls the pump output of a prop fluid anti-icing system.
What is the rheostat?
The most common anti-icing fluid used because it is readily available and inexpensive.
What is isopropyl alcohol?
A variety of equipment is specifically designed to prevent the formation of ice or remove it when encountered and must meet these certification standards.
What is FAR 23?
When flying at night, lights are necessary to illuminate aircraft structures. This regulation requires some form of lighting that is adequate for the crew to detect ice at night as well as monitor the operation of the de-ice equipment
What is FAR 23?
An air blast that forms a barrier that prevents raindrops from striking the windshield surface.
What is the windshield pneumatic rain removal system?
A circular U-shaped channel mounted on the rear of the prop assembly.
What is a Slinger Ring?
De-Icing fluid that is orange in color.
Forms when the remaining liquid portion of the water drop flows out over the aircraft surface, gradually freezing as a smooth sheet of solid ice.
What is Clear Ice?
Can form rapidly when water drops vary in size or when liquid drops intermingle with snow or ice particles.
What is Mixed Ice?
Also known as TKS.
What is Weeping Wing?
A force sends the anti-icing fluid out of the delivery tubes to each blade.
What is Centrifugal Force?
Externally mounted elements that are attached to each blade with an approved bonding agent.
What are de-icing boots?
An Ice control system that consist of thermal, electrical, and chemical systems.
Heated air can be directed through specially designed heater ducts in the leading edge of the wings & tail surfaces to prevent ice formation.
What is Thermal anti-icing?
Some aircraft models use a surface seal coating that is on the outside of the pilot’s/copilot’s windshield.
What is hydrophobic coating?
Forms when water drops are small, such as those in stratified clouds or light drizzle. The liquid portion remaining after initial impact freezes rapidly before the drop has time to spread over the aircraft surface. The small frozen droplets trap air giving the ice a white appearance.
What is Rime Ice?
A repellant system that permits application of the chemical repellant by a switch or push button in the cockpit. The proper amount of repellant is applied regardless of how long the switch is held.
What is windshield chemical rain repellant?
If the air is warm, dew will form, but if the temperature is below freezing, water will freeze & form tiny crystals.
What is Frost?
Perforated tubes in the leading edge used to distribute hot bleed air.
What is a Piccolo Tube?
Because ice usually forms unevenly it can cause imbalance and destructive vibration.
What is prop ice?
Are a narrow rubber strip that extends from the blade shank outboard some distance.
What is the Feed Shoe?
Consist of a motor-converter assembly, converter shaft, serrated adjustment sleeve, arm attach bolt, and a adjustment nut.
What is the wiper blade assembly?
