Historically used to mask odors and ward off illnesses (which is what they are doing in "Ring Around the Rosie"), posies are small, hand-held bouquets of flowers and fragrant herbs often bound tightly with ribbon. They were also used to communicate secret messages between folks in the Victorian Era, when each flower had a "secret" meaning - tulips for perfect love, daisies for innocence and purity, aloe for bitterness, daffodil for regard, chivalry, or unrequited love, and so on.
