What is meant by a kilowatt?

What is 1,000 watts

100

Which FAR specifies required maintenance records?

What is 14 CFR 91.417.

It specifies you must keep records of maintenance, preventative maintenance, major repairs and alterations, and 100-hour, annual, and progressive inspections

100

What is meant by matter?

What is anything that occupies space and has weight.

100

What inspection method would be most appropriate for checking a steel landing gear component for stress cracks?

What is magnetic particle inspection

100

For maximum strength of a formed sheet metal fitting, should the bend be made along or across the grain of the metal?

What is across the grain

200

What part of an amp is a milliamp?

What is one thousandth (0.001) of an amp

200

Who is authorized to approve an aircraft for return to service after a major repair?

Who is an aircraft mechanic holding an Inspection Authorization

200

What is the difference between speed and velocity?

What is direction?

Speed is the rate at which an object is moving. Velocity is the vector quantity that expresses both the rate and direction an object is moving.

200

In addition to 100-hour and annual inspections, where would an aircraft operator find the approved inspection programs for an aircraft?

What is the aircraft manufacturer's maintenance manual and Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA)

200

What is the bend tangent line?

What is a line in a flat pattern layout at which the bend starts

300

How can you tell the resistance of a composition resistor?

By a series of colored bands around one end of the resistor

300

What record must be made of the compliance of an Airworthiness Directive?

What is an entry in the aircraft maintenance records stating that the AD has been complied with.

This entry must include the AD number and revision date, the date of compliance, the aircraft total time in service, the method of compliance, and whether or not this is a recurring AD. If it is a recurring AD, the time of next compliance must be noted.

300

What is meant by thrust?

Deez nuts

300

What inspection method would be most appropriate for checking a steel landing gear component for stress cracks?

What is magnetic particle inspection

300

What is meant by bend allowance?

The actual amount of metal in a bend. It is the distance between the bend tangent lines in a flat pattern layout.

400

How is output voltage regulated in an AC alternator?

Voltage regulation is accomplished by varying the strength of the AC exciter fields (field voltage)

400

What is a malfunction and defect report?

What are voluntary reporting mechanisms to report unusual problems or weakness not associated with expected wear. Malfunction and Defect Reports (FAA Form 8010-4)
400

What is meant by ground resonance in a helicopter?

What is the destructive vibration that occurs when the helicopter touches down roughly and unevenly.

The shock throws a load into the lead-lag hinges of the rotor blades and causes them to oscillate about this hinge. If the frequency of this oscillation is the same as the resonant frequency of the fuselage, the energy will cause the helicopter to strike the ground hard with the opposite skid or wheel. If corrective action is not taken immediately, ground resonance can destroy the helicopter.

400

What is the procedure to use when performing a magnetic particle inspection of a part?

Thoroughly clean the part, magnetize it as directed by the appropriate service manual, flow the indicating medium over the surface, and inspect it under a "black" light. When the inspection is complete, thoroughly demagnetize the part.

400

What is the main function of throatless shears in an aircraft sheet metal shop?

Throatless shears are used to cut mild carbon steel up to 10-guage and stainless steel up to 12-guage

They can be used to cut irregular curves in the metal.

500

What is meant by impedance?

What is the total opposition to the flow of alternating current. It is the vector sum of resistance, capacitive reactance, and inductive reactance.
500

What is the purpose of 14 CFR Part 43?

What is the description of maintenance, preventative maintenance, rebuilding, and alteration of certificated aircraft.

500

What is meant by dissymmetry of lift produced by a helicopter rotor?

What is the side with the retreating blade produces less lift because the forward speed subtracts from the rotor speed.
500

What is the principle of eddy current inspection?

A current is induced into the metal being tested by a test probe. The amount of induced current is determined by the conductivity, mass, and permeability of the material, and the presence of any faults or voids.

500

What is the minimum edge distance allowed when installing rivets in a piece of aircraft sheet metal structure?

What is two times the diameter of the rivet shank.
