Techniques/Devices Used For Effect
The manner in which an author expresses his or her attitude; the intonation of the voice that expresses meaning.
What is tone?
Hints of what is to come later in a story.
What is foreshadowing?
The repetition of similar sounds, usually at the beginning of words.
What is alliteration?
a fictional tale, originally with religious significance, that explains heroes, gods, nature, and/or natural phenomena particular to a specific society/culture.
What is a myth?
A group of words that contains a subject and its verb, which may or may not be a complete sentence.
What is a clause?
Saying "passed away" instead of died would be an example of this term.
What is euphemism?
A POV in which we only learn about other characters through observation or dialogue, or through knowledge the narrator has (though this info is not always reliable).
What is 1st person POV?
The continuation of a sentence or clause over a line break.
What is enjambment?
A long, narrative poem about a hero, usually starting with an invocation to the muse and beginning in medias res (in the middle of the story).
What is an epic?
A tone that is explicitly instructive and preachy.
What is didactic?
Litotes and meiosis are two types of this technique.
What is understatement?
When the same scene is told from different perspectives or is retold after the reader has a different context for it.
What is a parallel scene?
Clashing, discordant, or harsh sounds.
A novel that deals with the development of a young person, usually from childhood/adolescence to maturity.
What is a bildungsroman (coming-of-age story)?
The word, phrase, or clause to which a pronoun refers.
