Ant. Thigh Muscles
This term refers to the group of muscles located on the anterior thigh. There are 4 of them.
What are the quadriceps?
The name for the group of muscles on the medial thigh. Hint: they perform ADducction of the thigh at the hip.
What are the adductors?
This group of muscles was named for the way butchers used to hang pork in their window displays - from these muscles.
What are the hamstrings?
This group of muscles is located just below the base of the skull.
What are the suboccipitals?
This bundle of nerves arises from the spinal cord to innervate the upper extremity.
What is the brachial plexus?
The deepest of the quadriceps muscles, located in the anterior thigh deep.
What is vastus intermedius?
The most proximal of the muscles located in the medial thigh intermediate region.

These muscles (anterior, medial, and posterior) are located in the lateral neck superficial and insert on the 1st and 2nd ribs.
What are the scalenes?
Sometimes called the tailor's muscle, this muscle is located in the anterior/medial thigh superficial.
What is sartorius?
This quadriceps muscle has its origin on the medial aspect of the linea aspera of the femur.
What is vastus medialis?
The muscle whose origin is on the pubis, ischium, and ischial tuberosity.
What is adductor magnus?
This muscle lies superficial to semimembranosus and attaches at the anterior medial tibial condyle.
What is semitendionsus?
This muscle in the anterior/lateral neck superficial had two heads and inserts on the mastoid process and superior nuchal line of the occipital bone.
What is sternocleidomastoid?
This group of muscles is located in the posterior back deep, and run "alongside the spine".
What are the paraspinal muscles?
This quadriceps muscle has its origin on the lateral aspect of the linea aspera of the femur and the greater trochanter.
What is vastus lateralis?
The muscle located in the medial thigh superficial whose origin is on the pubis and insertion is on the anterior medial tibial condyle (pes anserinus).
What is gracilis?
This muscle has a long head and short head, and inserts at the head of the fibula.
What is biceps femoris?
This muscle in the posterior neck intermediate has an origin on the ligament of nuchae?
What is splenius capitis?
These muscles cover the paraspinals, and help hold two-legged creatures against gravity.
What is the erector group?
This muscle crosses both the knee and the hip joints - the only quadriceps muscle to cross both joints.
What is rectus femoris?
The tendons of semitendinosus, gracilis, and sartorius form this insertion. The translation for this term is "goose's foot".
What is pes anserinus?
This biceps femoris head attaches at the linea aspera of the femur.
What is biceps femoris short head?
This muscle in the posterior neck intermediate originates on the spinous processes of T3-T6.
What is splenius cervicis?
This unique nerve feature of biceps femoris was discussed only in class.
