What are centripetal forces?

Interconnectedness of countries developed through technology and expanded transportation advances

What is the EU (European Union)?
Aspects of a country or culture that push people away from the country and loyalty towards it
What are centrifugal forces?
Most or all of the governing power is held by the national government
What is a unitary state?
This type of boundary is drawn by outside powers and may have ignored existing cultural patterns
What is a superimposed boundary?
A policy of extending a country's power and influence (including borders) through diplomacy or military force. Ex. World War I
What is imperialism?
Companies that conduct business on a global scale
What are transnational companies?
Long and narrow shape; often have communication and transportation problems. Ex. Chile, Vietnam, Tanzania
What are elongated states?
The fragmentation of a state or region into smaller, often hostile, units along ethno-linguistic lines.

The advocacy of full political secession from the larger group along cultural, ethnic, tribal, or governmental lines

The drawing of boundaries for political districts by the party in power to protect or increase its power

The practice of multiple countries forming an organization for the benefit of all members
What is supranationalism?
a place of physical congestion between wider regions of movement and interaction
What is a choke point?
A state without territory connected to an ocean
What are landlocked states?
Have their own local and legislative bodies to govern a region with a population that is an ethnic minority within the entire country
What are autonomous regions?
The process of legally adding territory to a city
What is annexation?
A movement to unite people who share a language or other cultural elements but are divided by a national boundary
What is irredentism?
The idea that a nation has the right to make their own decisions
What is self determination?
States, territories or parts of a state or territory that are completely surrounded by the territory of another state
What is a political enclave?
