Explain why Victor and the Creature are foil characters.

Victor has an idyllic, nurtured childhood, while the creature is immediately abandoned, forcing him to learn survival in the wild.

Both are driven by intense curiosity and intelligence, but Victor uses his knowledge for selfish creation, while the creature uses his to understand his existence and loneliness.

Victor creates the creature and abandons him, turning away from companionship. Conversely, the creature desperately craves human companionship, yet is rejected due to his appearance.

As the story progresses, their roles reverse: the creature, initially innocent, becomes murderous, while Victor, the perpetrator, becomes the victim, consumed by the need for revenge.

Neurodivergent - Creature's inability to connect with people in "normal" ways reflects neurodivergent people's stigma around social interaction

Disfigured People - the horrorific reaction to the Creature's physical appearance reflects society's instrinsic bias against those who are not conventionally attractive or who look different from the majority of society

People of Color - the Creature's exile to the woods reflects the abandonment society's commit for marginalized communities such as Native Americans, the Roma, etc. His oppression also reflects many aspects of what it is like to be oppressed for one's race/ethnicity

definition: the placement of two or more, often contrasting, elements side-by-side to highlight their differences, create suspense, or evoke irony

A lullaby playing during a violent battle scene

A homeless person sitting outside a luxury fashion boutique.

Frankenstein: Creator (Dr. Frankenstein) vs. creation (the monster)

Gatsby: Tom in the Valley of Ashes

500

Explain why Nick could be considered an unreliable narrator, citing specific examples to support your explanation.

When a story is told from one person’s perspective, the narrator will almost always be unreliable in some way.

Nick's need to tell the reader he is trustworthy and nonjudgemental ironically makes the reader distrustful of him.

The main thing that indicates his unreliability is his heightened fondness for Gatsby. We are inclined to see Gatsby as a sensitive genius and tend to side with him in the romantic triangle between Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom. The less appealing aspects of Gatsby’s character – the fact that he is involved in adultery, deception, and criminal activity – are justified as the romantic lengths to which he’ll go to be reunited with Daisy.

500

What does the hurricane in the Everglades symbolize?

Fate/destiny

nature's disregard for human needs

nature's "godlike" power

humanity's vulnerability

a revelation about life's essential truths

How does Frankenstein connect to the creation story in the Bible OR the Myth of Prometheus? Explain.

The Creation Story

Victor acts as a creator, similar to God in Genesis, but without the divine wisdom or loving care, leading to a distorted, monstrous creation.

The story mirrors the Fall, where the pursuit of forbidden knowledge brings sin and suffering into the world.

The monster often compares himself to Adam, questioning his creator and asking for a mate, but later feels more like Satan because he is rejected and cursed by his "God," Victor.

Prometheus

Prometheus stole fire from the gods to empower humanity; Victor "steals" the spark of life (metaphorically using lightning) to animate his creature.

Prometheus was chained to a rock for eternity for his arrogance, while Victor is punished through isolation, guilt, and the destruction of his loved ones by the monster.

Just as Prometheus is sometimes credited with shaping human beings from clay, Victor crafts his creature from disparate, inanimate parts.

Unlike Prometheus, who cares for his creations, Victor fails to nurture his creation and flees in horror, highlighting a darker, more selfish form of ambition.
