The nervous system is divided into 2 primary categories - what are they?

Central and peripheral

100

The nervous system is primarily made up of this tissue type

Neuroglia

100

Movement of ions cause . . .

changes in electrical charges

100

Which lobe of the brain controls reasoning, decision making & planning

Frontal

100

Spaces in the brain that contain cerebrospinal fluid

Ventricles

200

Division often referred to as the "fight or flight"

Sympathetic

200

This nervous tissue makes up 10% of the nervous system

Neurons

200

Name of the space where two neurons meet

Synapse

200

Relays information from PNS to the cerebrum for processing/sorting

Thalamus

200

You’ve been practicing your jump shot for basketball every day.  When you get into a game, which section of your brain allows you to use these motions easily and without thought?

Cerebellum

300

Describe the difference between the autonomic and Somatic divisions

Somatic is voluntary and autonomic is involuntary

300

Which of the following is used to classify a neuron

number of processes from cell body

300

When an impulse passes through a neuron, what is the correct order for transmission of the impulse (from receiving the signal to passing it on)

dendrites -> cell body -> axon

300

Sits just above spinal cord, controls involuntary activities

Brain Stem

300

What are the three regions of the brain stem?

Midbrain, Pons, Medulla Oblongata

400

Which part of the nervous system can help calm someone down after an emergency has occurred?

Parasympathetic division

400

____________ wrap around the axon of a neuron to create the __________________

Schwann cells, myelin sheath

400

Depolarization happens as result of this ion moving into the neuron

Na+ or Sodium

400

Which structures are found in the diencephalon?

Thalamus, hypothalamus, and pineal gland

400

Breathing is controlled by this region (brainstem specifically)

Pons

500

When you intentionally tighten your abdominal muscles, which divisions of the nervous system are being used

Motor; Somatic

500

These neurons carry impulses to the central nervous system (CNS)

Afferent

500

Describes a cell's resting potential

The cell is negatively charged and the environment is positively charged

500

What is the order of the layers of meninges, starting against the skull and moving toward the brain

dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater

Describe 2 differences between the cerebrum and cerebellum?

Answer could focus on any two:

Location: Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, at the top and front of the head. Cerebellum is underneath the cerebrum, at the back of the head, near the brainstem.

Function: Cerebrum does higher cognitive functions (thinking, memory, learning, language), sensory processing, and voluntary movement initiation. Cerebellum coordinates voluntary movements, maintains balance, posture, and motor learning.

Structure: Cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres and four lobes, with a highly folded surface. Cerebellum is smaller, with a unique folded surface (folia) and contains a large number of neurons.
