A notation indicating the elements in a compound and the ratios of the atoms of each element.
What is a chemical formula
A chemical bond formed between oppositely charged ions.
What is an ionic bond?
How many atoms of each element are in the compound AgNO3? (Ag is silver)
What is 1 silver, 1 nitrogen, 3 oxygen
Is gasoline polar or non polar?
What is non polar? (If water can't dissolve, it's non polar.)
The science that we will study next year in Ch 2.
What is Biology?
Substances that undergo a chemical change
What is a reactant?
A molecule that has slight positive and negative charges due to an imbalance in the way electrons are shared.
What is a polar molecule?
If a compound has 1 zinc atom and 2 chlorine atoms, what is the compound’s chemical formula?
ZnCl2
When does an atom become an anion (an ion with a negative charge)?
What is...when it gains electrons and has more electrons than protons.
What holds atoms together in a covalent bond?
What is...the attraction between the shared electrons and protons in each nucleus.
New substances formed as a result of a chemical change
What is a product?
The force of attraction between molecules of different substances so that they tend to stick together.
What is adhesion?
One of the most common household cleaners is ammonia, which has a chemical formula of NH3. How many atoms are in a molecule of ammonia?
What is a total of 4.
Suppose you were able to count the molecules in a substance. Which would have more molecules, 1 liter of liquid water or 1 liter of ice? Why?
What is the liquid? Why? Molecules in solid water are farther apart that they are in liquid water.
When is an atom least likely to be reactive?
What is....when it has a stable electron configuration (or the highest occupied energy level is filled with electrons).
Numbers that appear before a formula in a chemical equation to show how many atoms or molecules of each reactant or product are involved in the reaction.
What are coefficients?
The sum of protons and neutrons in a nucleus.
What is the atomic mass?
True of False: Water has one of the HIGHEST surface tensions in all of creation.
What is True?
Describe two ways an element can achieve a stable electron configuration.
What is Transferring electrons (ionic bonds) or Sharing electrons (covalent bonds)
Daily Double: Wager first!
Explain one part of experiment 4.3 with correct terms identified in Module 4.
A chemical bond in which two atoms share one or more pairs of valence electrons.
What is a covalent bond?
The force of attraction between molecules of the same substance so that they tend to stay together.
What is cohesion?
Calcium carbonate is an ionic substance commonly called “chalk.” If this molecule has one calcium, one carbon, and three oxygen atoms, what is its chemical formula?
What is CaCO3?
Why do ionic compounds include at least one metal and one nonmetal?
Metals form cations (positive ions) and many nonmetals form anions (negative ions). Ionic compounds form when cations and anions are attracted to each other, so you must have a metal and a nonmetal.
Based on their chemical formulas, which of these compounds is not likely to be an ionic compound: KBr, SO2, FeCL3? How can you tell?
What is SO2? Both sulfur and oxygen are nonmetals, so SO2 is unlikely to be an ionic compound. Why? Ions form between metals and nonmetals. Potassium (K) is a metal while Bromine (Br) is not. Iron (Fe) is a metal while Chlorine (Cl) is a nonmetal. Both of these are ionic compounds.
