What was sharecropping/black codes?
Landowners employed mostly black families in the South to be allowed to rent land as long as they would farm it. It also notably looked a lot like slavery since the landlords were allowed to charge whatever they wanted and so they deliberately charged more than they knew their tenants could make, and thanks to the black codes, they couldn't opt out of their contracts until the debts were paid off, which in many cases never happened.
