" What benefits could fasting add to a religious experience for a Muslim"?
Fasting can both allow people to connect more with god and to sympathize with the poor. Eating and thinking about food takes up time in the day that could be spent devoted to god. By freeing up this time people have more time to pray and read the Quran, causing them to connect more with their God/Religion. Fasting can also cause people to sympathize more with the poor. By not eating, people feel what it is like to not be able to afford food and can be more willing to help people in need.
If you were traveling a long distance (with valuable goods) on the Silk Road, list and describe two ways you can ensure your journey would be a success.
If I were a silk road merchant with goods, I would likely travel in a large group and with weapons. A large group keeps thieves away through intimidation. One person is easy to rob without them noticing, but in a large group it is almost impossible not to be caught. It would have been to much of a risk for thieves to take. By bringing weapons the large group of merchants are able to intimidate the would be robbers. If a band of robbers sees a caravan of people with swords, they are much less likely to attempt to rob them because of the high likelihood of injury or death.
How did the' Sunni/ Shia' division in Islam impact the Safavid Empire ?
The divide in the branches of Sunni and Shia Muslims is one of the factors that drove the Safavids to attempt expansion of their empire. Sunni Muslims believe that Muhammad's successor should be a non-direct family member who is best fit for the position, While Shias believe that his successor must be a direct descendant. This divide caused that Safavid's, who are Shia, to say that the Sunni Muslims are heretics. Because of this they began to expanded into other territories to convert Sunni Muslims to Shia Islam and to kill those who wouldn't convert.
Are the ' Colombian Exchange' and 'Mercantilism' inseparable topics? Can you have one without the other?
The Columbian Exchange and mercantilism are topics that are inseparable. The Columbian estrange focused on European powers acquiring Africans, forcing them to work in the colonies in the new world, and send the raw materials made in the new world back to the old world to make a profit. This system makes the European powers very wealthy but at the cost of the colonies. This idea of another country getting all of the wealth lines up with the ideas of mercantilism, in which nations focus on exports, often by the use of slave labor. While this economic system is very good for the mother countries, it is bad for the colonies the mother country controls
According to Adam Smith, why is the ' Division of Labor" good for the worker and the consumer?
Division of Labor is good for both the worker and consumer for different reasons. Workers before this idea usually made an entire product by themselves or with few people, this meant they needed to be highly skilled in all parts of producing the product. With division of labor, that product is now made by dozens of people who all preform different parts of creating the product. This creates more jobs and makes it so the worker only needs to know how to make one thing, making it easier to get into the career. For the consumer, division of labor caused products to be make more quickly and efficiently, meaning there are more products available to the consumer than before.
