Which U.S. president officially declared Thanksgiving to be a national holiday? What was the name of the tribe that is said to have the "first thanksgiving festival" with the pilgrims?
The Wampanoag tribe. Other tribes in this area such as the Patuxet and Pequot were also "celebrated".
However, there was only one remaining survivor of the Patuxet tribe, Squanto, at the time. Most of his tribe had already been kidnapped and enslaved in Europe 20-50 years earlier. Everyone else died of smallpox. Squanto was taken back on the Mayflower. He is one of the sole reasons that the pilgrims were able to survive. He died from a fever before "Thanksgiving" occurred.
The Pequot Nation had gathered for their annual Green Corn Festival. The next day, they awoke being surrounded by the pilgrims. The massacre began. Over 700 unarmed men, women, and children were murdered. Women and children over 14 were sold into slavery, being sent primarily to Europe, and bounties were paid for all other scalps for many years to come.
The massacre was deemed so successful, that a similar raid occurred on the Wampanoag. The Wampanoag had been very friendly to the Pilgrims and had "harvest festivals" in previous years with them.
After each massacre, a day of "Thanksgiving" was celebrated. Eventually, there were so many massacres that George Washington decided to have one day to celebrate each and every massacre. Thus, Thanksgiving became a national holiday.
