-art movement that came from a negative reaction toward WW1
-rejected reason and logic and went toward nonsense and irrationality in their art works
What is Expressionism?
artists aimed to express meaning or emotion rather than the physical reality

-instead of showing objects the way they appeared in life (realism) they used line, shape, and color to show emotions these objects brought up
What is Realism?
-artists representing something exactly the way it is shown
Example: an apple was drawn as close to an apple as possible

-These artists felt that the war was caused by human reason and intellect
-the only way to avoid another war was to set aside reason and behave irrationally
What is Surrealism?
-artists creating works that brought together a dreamlike feeling with elements from reality
