What is the right way to enter the classroom?

Students will sit down quietly in their assigned seat, and wait for Ms. Simmons's instructions.

100

Is it ok for me to talk to my neighbor while Ms. Simmons is talking?

NO, I need to look at and listen to Ms. Simmons's instructions.  If I am not, I might miss what she is saying.

100

Can I use the eraser for anything other than erasing?

NO, only use it to erase something.  It is not mean to be stabbed, drawn on, split in half, etc.

100

I really don't like my neighbor's artwork.  Should I tell them?

No, just because you have different tastes, doesn't mean you have to be ugly and make them feel bad.

Remember, we are all unique and don't always like the same things.

Also Art is not everyone's strength.

100
Art is not my strength, so I'm just not going to pay attention or try.  Is this ok?

No.  I need to at least try.  Who knows, if I keep trying, I might get better.

200

How should you act when there are materials (glue, scissors, markers etc.) already at your table?

I can look at, but not touch the materials.

200

What am I expected to do when I hear "MONA"?

Respond by saying "LISA" AND I should have my eyes on Ms. Simmons, my mouth closed, and my hands and body still.

200

Can I get up and sharpen my pencil whenever I want?

NO, please do not sharpen pencils while someone is talking or there is a video on.

200

When one of my classmates is answering a question, should I listen and give them my attention?

ABSOLUTELY!  If someone has been called on, we ALL need to give them attention.

200

Do I have to do my artwork exactly like Ms. Simmons's?

Not always.  It depends on the project, and what I want to do differently.  I should follow the technique that I am shown, and should ask Ms. Simmons first if I can add something or do something differently.

300
I really want to sit with my best friend, but we are assigned to different tables.  Can I sit in a seat I'm not assigned to?

No, I need to sit where I am assigned.  There a are few occasions when I will be allowed to sit where I choose.

300

Should I be swinging my legs to kick my neighbor under the table?

NO, because I could harm the person I am kicking, and because I am not fully paying attention to instructions.

300

When can I go grab materials for myself or my table?

When Ms. Simmons has specifically called my name or my table to get materials.  If I need something that is not already at my table, I should ask Ms. Simmons before going and getting it.

300

Can I mark or touch someone else's artwork?

NO.  Unless they have given you permission, you should only mark on or touch your own artwork.

300

When should I put my name and class on my paper?

ALWAYS! It is very rare when I don't need to label my work.

400

I see my classroom teacher in the hallway, but I haven't cleaned up and Ms. Simmons hasn't called my table.  Can I go get it in line?

No, I need to make sure my workspace is clean, I have put up my materials, and Ms. Simmons has called my name or my table to line up.

400

Ms. Simmons has called out "Mona" because she needs our attention.  Can I continue to work on my project?

NO, I need to stop what I am doing and give Ms. Simmons my attention.

400

It is almost time for class to be over.  What should me and my neighbors do now?

We should work together to organize materials, look under our table, wipe down the table (if needed).  Then wait quietly for Ms. Simmons to call us to line up.

400

My best friend sits across the room and I really want to tell them something.  Is is ok for me to go talk to them during class?

No, I need to stay at my table and be productive.  I can wait until lunch/recess to tell them.

400

I'm getting frustrated and don't like my artwork.  Is is ok for me to destroy it right away?

NO, please don't do that!  If you need help, ask a neighbor or Ms. Simmons for suggestions.  We can probably find a way to improve it without wasting what you've already made, or having to start over.

500

I'm in line with my classmates and I really want to tell my neighbor something.  Can I talk to them right now?

NO, when I get in line, I am expected to stand still and quiet.  My class won't earn chapstick if I'm talking.

500

While we are working on our project, I want to tell my neighbor about a book that I am reading.  Is that ok, or should I wait for lunch/recess?

Yes, ABSOLUTELY.  While working, you are more than welcome to talk to your neighbors.  Just make sure you are being productive AND using an inside voice (1 or 2).

500

Is it ok for me to play with materials or use them in a way they are not meant to be used?

NO.  I do not want to waste or damage the materials.  I know I am not the only one who needs to use them.

500

Can I ask a classmate to do something for my project?

NO, I need to do it myself.  BUT I can ask them to show or explain to me what they did.

500

I noticed that my neighbor has done something different from the instructions.  Should I remind them?

Yes, you can.  You can respectfully remind them of something, but don't talk to them like they are wrong or breaking the rules.
