What is a trade war and how might it affect the economy?

A trade war occurs when countries who trade goods together put tariffs on each other. One country may start with one tariff on a product from another country. That country may retaliate by placing a tariff on a product from the first country. This could affect the economy. On the one hand, companies within a country could have the opportunity to make more money if there is less competition with a company outside of the country. For instance, a company selling soy beans in the U.S. could sell more if a tax is put on soy beans from other countries. One problem with a trade war is that it raises prices of products, which can increase what people in the country end up spending on the products.
