What is the history behind Palenque hosting summer youth programs?
On June 27 2007, Schanna Gayden, a Funston student, was at the Funston school park with her 15 year old cousin. Schanna was 13 years old. They were buying fruit from a local vendor when a gang fight broke out and a bullet hit Schanna which led to her death. Our community mourned for Schanna. Community organizers began mobilizing. Palenque LSNA began thinking of ways to help young people stay safe in the summer while working on sustainable solutions for the gang violence our communities were suffering from.
