"Describe the meninges (name + quick description)
The meninges are connective tissue that are composed of three layers that help protect the spine. Dura mater- dense irregular C tissue and is the outer layer, Arachnoid mater- web like and is the middle layer, and the Pia mater- which is tender and is the inner layer.
Describe the Brachial PlexusÃ
roots, trunks, divisions, cords, branches-
The roots range from C5-T1, the trunks are in the superior, middle, and inferior part of the brachial plexus, The divisions can be found in the anterior and the posterior parts, the chords are in the lateral, medial, and posterior parts, and the branches are in the median, ulnar, and radial.
Segments of the skin supplied by spinal nerves that carry somatic sensory nerve impulses to the brain.
Dermatomes
Describe which structures protect the spinal cord
The spinal cord is protected by Bone(vertebrae), connective tissue (meninges), and fluid (cerebrospinal fluid)
The cervical plexus includes which cervical roots? What very important nerve does it contribute to??
It includes cervical roots C1-C5 and they contribute to the phrenic nerve.
dorsal root ganglion
Cell bodies of sensory nerves
What is a spinal nerve?{components? Number?}
A spinal nerve is a mixed nerve that carries motor, sensory, and autonomic signals between the spinal cord and the body. The are 31 pairs and they are grouped in regions; cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal.
epidural space
space between the dura mater and periosteum of vertebrae
lined by ependymal cells and contains cerebrospinal fluid
central canal
Describe the connective tissue coverings of the spinal nerve
The connective tissue covering of the spinal nerve are Epineurium- covers the entire nerve,
Perineurium- surrounds group of nerve fibers forming a fascicle,
Endoneurium- wraps around each nerve fiber.
*subarachnoid space
sponge like cavity with cerebrospinal fluid and larger blood vessels.
transmits motor information is efferent
ventral root of spinal nerve
What are the functions of the spinal cord?
It processes reflexes, integrates excitatory and inhibitory post synaptic potentials, and it conducts sensory impulses to the brain and motor impulses to the effectors.
bipolar neuron
a nerve cell with one axon and one dendrite with a cell body in between
a cell body of sensory a nerve
dorsal root of spinal nerve
