Which type of light on the electromagnetic spectrum can we see?

Visible

100
Name the four terrestrial planets.

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars

100

What lies between Mars and Jupiter?

The Asteroid Belt

100

How long does it take for the moon to rotate around the Earth?

About 1 month or 29.5 days

100

What causes the tides?

The moon

200

What is the electromagnetic spectrum?

It tells us all of the different types of light.

200

Why does Venus rotate so slowly?

They think it was hit by a massive object while it was forming.

200

Why is Neptune so blue?

It has lots of methane, about 100x more than Uranus

200

Why does the moon have so many craters?

It has no atmosphere

200

What is the thing called that is like a giant sphere of asteroids around the solar system and is super far away?

The Oort Cloud

300

Which type of light has the longest wavelengths? Which has the shortest?

Radio has the longest, gamma has the shortest.

300

Why do Mercury and Mars not have a strong magnetic field?

They do not have a liquid core, it is solid.

300

Which gas giant(s) have rings?

All of them, but Saturn's are the most visible

300

Which phase of the moon is highest in the sky at midnight?

The Full Moon

300

How much of the solar system's mass does the Sun make up?

99.8%

400

Which type of light corresponds to the highest energy? Which corresponds to having the lowest energy?

Highest energy is gamma, lowest energy is radio.

400

Explain what the runaway greenhouse effect is and which planet it affects.

Venus. It is when harmful rays from the Sun get through the atmosphere and get trapped. More rays get trapped which makes the planet hotter and hotter and the atmosphere thicker and thicker.

400

What is it called when different layers of Jupiter spin at different speeds? Why does it happen?

Differential rotation. It happens because of different densities and compositions.

400

How do you know if the moon is waxing or waning by just looking at it?

Waxing, the light is on the right

Waning, the light is on the left

400

How can we tell if a planet has a solid or liquid core?

If it has a magnetic field.

Solid- no magnetic field

Liquid- magnetic field

500

What type of light do humans emit energy in?

Infrared

500

Explain why Mars is a dying planet and how that ties into its surface being so red.

No magnetic field, so solar winds blew away the atmosphere. Then water evaporated and was also blown away by solar winds. Iron was covered by the water but when it was exposed, it started to rust, making the surface appear red.

500

How was the planet Neptune discovered?

Uranus had a weird orbit, so they used math to figure out that Neptune was there

500

Why is one side of the moon cratered and the other isn't as much?

Kind of just a coincidence, but they think maybe because the heat from young Earth made one side melt and got rid of the craters.

500

What are each of Kepler's Laws?

1- Planets orbit in ellipse shape

2- Equal times and equal areas

3- Semimajor axis is proportional to the period
