Science is about finding out why and how things happen. It's about how the world around you works.
What is science
finding out why and how things work
Friction between the soles of the shoes and the sidewalk helps you from sliding around. If you step on a slimy banana skin, the friction disappears, so your foot slips.
Why can I slip on a banana peel?
There is no friction
Air contains oxygen, which you need to stay alive. Air is made up of lots of gases mixed together. One of the gases is oxygen. We all need oxygen to live, and so do plants and animals.
Why do I need air?
In order to live

Zoologists are scientists who tell us about different animals, and how and where they live.
What are Zoologists? Where do they work?
scientists that work with and study animals. They work at the Zoo
A force called drag allows rain to fall and snow to float. The air always tries to slow down moving things. Smooth, round things have less drag, so they fall faster. Fluffy or jagged things have more drag so they fall more slowly.
Why does rain fall and snow float?
Due to drag
The shape of the bird's wings allows it to fly. Air from below pushes the wings. A wingspan is a distance between one wingtip to the other.
How does a bird fly?
the air below the wings pushes them up

Astronomers are scientists who study planets, stars, and space. They use telescopes to study outer space.
What is an astronomer?
Scientists who study planets, stars, and space
Pulling on a bike's brakes makes rubber pads on the wheels of your bike squeeze to slow the bike down. The rubbers stops the wheels from turning.
How does a bike stop?
By the rubber pads squeezing the bike wheel
When it stops raining, puddles disappear. The puddle dries as the water turns into an invisible gas called water vapor. The gas mixes in the air when the water does this, its' called evaporation.

What is a microscope?
A tool used by scientists to study tiny things
If your hands are cold, you can rub them together to warm them up. This happens because the friction between your hands makes heat when you rub them together.
How do you warm up your hands?
Rub them together to cause friction
when the water in soup gets hot, it changes into a gas that makes bubbles. These bubbles rise up through soup. As more of the soup gets how there are more bubbles that come up to the top.
Why does soup bubble?
water changes to a gas. What is this called?

Science helps us to understand how everyday things work, such as electricity. Thomas Edison was the inventor of the light bulb, and so many technologies that followed in those footsteps.
What does science do?
helps us understand how everyday things work
A long time ago, people found their way around using a magnetic stone. This magnetic stone was called a lodestone. It was like an early compass.
What is a lodestone? What is a compass
a magnetic stone. A magnetic tool used to give directions of N, S, W, E
Before clocks were invented, people told time by watching a candle burn down. As a candle burns, its wax melts and the candle gets shorter. People could tell how much time was passing by how short the candle was getting.
