Is coral a plant or an animal?
Animal! It grows by producing coral polyps.
Wait... what?!
Corals are really made of hundreds or even thousands of tiny animals called polyps. Each polyp builds a hard shell around itself, like building a little fort, to stay safe.
The polyp has a small mouth with wiggly tentacles around it. The tentacles reach out and sting food to catch it, kind of like a jellyfish.
Some corals have tiny plants called algae living with them. They are best buddies — the algae make food for the coral, and the coral gives the algae a place to live. They take care of each other in a symbiotic relationship!
