Explain the conditions in the trenches during WWI
The trenches were dirty and uncomfortable, with diseases and poor nutrition being common. In summer there were flies everywhere feeding on the dead bodies in no-mans land. During winter, snow would fall and build up. When it rained (often), the trenches would fill with water, leading to trench foot.
Explain the difference between European (German and Italian) and Japanese POW camps
European camps - generally followed the Geneva convention, had better food, and offered opportunities for recreational activities.
Japanese - treated as 'non-persons', high mortality rate, limited food, forced to work on projects such as the Thai-Burma railway.
